What are we learning?
In this episode of Beat Breakdown, we'll be breaking down the groove to a live version of 'The Wad' by Vels Trio, played in Giles Peterson's Brownswood Basement. The modern jazz trio from Brighton lay down some serious grooves throughout all of their releases and are definitely one to watch live! I've seen them play a few times and the drummer has never played a song the same twice, so once you've got this down, improvise some ideas yourself and see what you can come up with!
Break it down.
This groove is based from a simple 8th note back beat, with a bass drum on '1' and '3' and a snare on '2' and '4', but where this groove gets tricky is in the improvised variations played by the drummer. There is a solid mix of different ideas going on, from 32nd note Hi-Hat patterns, to 16th note linear phrasing, to straight up 16th note bangers around the toms!
