What are we learning?
In this episode of beat breakdown, we'll be looking at the intro groove to Puma Blue's laid back, banger Moon Undah Water. I saw Puma Blue a few months ago, at London's Shepards Bush O2, on the same bill as The Yuseef Dayes Trio and Jordan Rakei- they're blend of jazz soul and hip hop beats got me straight away- not to mention that their drummer rips!
Break it down.
The main groove to the song is a back beat with a rim click on '2' and '4' but I like to think of my counting in 16th note triplets (1+a 1+a, 2+a 2+a, 3+a 3+a, 4+a 4+a) to lock into that laid back feel. In the intro there are some precise hits on the last 16th note triplet of beat '4' and '1' to watch out for and some subtle variations to lock into and experiment with! I've focused on and notated the intro groove but there are loads of wicked grooves throughout this song so definitely keep listening and have a play along!
